Ranked Red Hawks Top Foresters

The Lake Forest women's basketball team ran into the top-ranked team in the Midwest Conference on Tuesday night at the Sports and Recreation Center, falling to No. 20 Ripon College, 72-29.

Guard Jamie Springstead led the Foresters (2-17, 0-10 MWC) offensively. The Florida native scored a game-high 14 points and collected a team-high five rebounds. Guard Ariana Ferreira-Torralba added five points, and forward Rylie Crecelius chipped in four points and two rebounds.

The senior Springstead was the focal point of the Lake Forest offense in the opening quarter, scoring seven points in frame.

She banked in a three-pointer from the wing, hit cutting layup off an assist from Ferreira-Torralba, and then broke the Ripon press, dribbled into the heart of the Red Hawk defense and hit a floater in the paint to tie the score at 10.

Ripon ended first quarter on 9-0 run and kept that momentum for the rest of the game.

The Foresters shot 24.4 percent from the field and made 3-of-12 attempts from three-point range. Lake Forest was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The Foresters struggled on the glass against the size of the Red Hawks, a team that leads the Midwest Conference in total rebounding, offensive rebounding, and rebounding margin. Ripon outrebounded Lake Forest 45-26 and parlayed 22 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.

Lake Forest will celebrate Alumni Day in its next outing Saturday. The Foresters will face off against the Cornell College Rams at 3 p.m. There will also be the dedication of the Slaats Skybox overlooking the varsity gym, honoring former head women's basketball coach and Director of Athletics/Vice President for Athletics Jackie Slaats.
