Lake Forest College handball player Emma Kinane and basketball player Cristian Rodriguez were named Forester Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.
Kinane captured the Women's Open championship at the Illinois Handball Association Singles Tournament in Schaumburg over the weekend. The junior defeated her semifinal opponent 21-16, 21-12 but dropped the first game 21-13 in the final. She took the second 21-14 and prevailed 11-8 in the tiebreaker to earn the victory. She had been the event's runner-up in 2024 and was a semifinalist a year ago.
Kinane is the first Forester in 11 years to win a state singles title and the first female at the College to do so since Megan Mehilos in 2004.
Rodriguez was the leading scorer in both of Lake Forest's victories last week, scoring 28 points in Tuesday's 69-61 triumph over Beloit College and 26 in a 105-87 win at Knox College on Saturday. The senior forward also grabbed nine rebounds in the first contest and a game-high eight in the second and his stat line for the week also included five assists, two blocks, and three steals.
Among Rodriguez's 28 points on Tuesday was the 1,000th of his collegiate career. He is the Foresters' second-leading scorer this season with 19.2 points per game and leads the squad with 8.2 rebounds oer contest.
This marks the second career Forester Athlete of the Week honor for both individuals. Kinane also earned the award during her freshman season and Rodriguez last year.
