In a battle between two of the most dangerous hitting teams in the Midwest Conference, plenty of runs were to be expected Sunday in a doubleheader between the Lake Forest softball team and Cornell College.
Â
The Foresters and Rams are the top two teams in the conference in batting average and slugging percentage, and it was Lake Forest (12-10) who was able to take the upper hand with a resounding 11-4 victory in game one, followed by a 12-3 win in the second game.
Â
Lake Forest closed out its first weekend in Midwest Conference play a perfect 4-0 by sweeping Cornell on Sunday, after the Foresters swept Grinnell College on Saturday. The Foresters scored at least 11 runs in every game this weekend.
Â
Game 1: Lake Forest 11, Cornell 4
Cadence Dempsey led the Foresters in game one with a pair of home runs in the 11-4 win.
Â
Sunday marked Dempsey's first career multi-home run game, and the St. Louis native finished 2-for-5 on the game with a career-best six RBI.
Â
Slugger
Emmie Nyen could not be stopped, as she went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI double to get the scoring started for Lake Forest.
Kyla Chevalier added a pair of RBI and, after hitting her first career triple on Saturday against Grinnell, Chevalier followed that up with her second triple in as many games in the first inning to score Nyen.
Â
Seven different Foresters contributed multiple hits as Lake Forest pounced early to an 8-0 lead through the first two innings.
Â
Riley Stiles (6-2) earned the victory in the circle for Lake Forest and pitched all seven innings. The junior earned her team-high sixth win of the season, allowing just two earned runs, while matching her season high with four strikeouts.
Â
Game 2: Lake Forest 12, Cornell 3
Sophomore
Kaia Mismash set the Lake Forest school record for career stolen bases in the first inning as the Foresters cruised in game two to a 12-3 victory.
Â
Mismash passed Maria Zepeda with her 59th career stolen base, when she stole second base after leading off the game with a single. Mismash would waste no time building on the record by promptly stealing third base as well, before coming around to score on a Nyen RBI groundout.
Â
Mismash finished the game hitting 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and three runs scored, as her presence at the leadoff spot in the lineup kept the Lake Forest offense humming.
Â
Dempsey hit her third homer of the day to give Lake Forest a 5-0 lead in the second inning. It marked her seventh home run of the year, which already is a new personal career high for homers in a season.
Â
Kyla Chevalier hit her fourth home run of the year and knocked in three RBI, while scoring twice herself.
Jolie Devalk and
Kaylee Purgatorio each went 2-for-3 at the plate, as the Foresters saw contributions up and down the lineup.
Â
Senior
Hannah Smith (2-4) picked up the win for Lake Forest and pitched all five innings. She limited Cornell to just six hits and allowed three runs (two earned).
Â
The Foresters will have their first conference game at home in their next outing, as Knox College comes to Mohr Field on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one is Parents Day and starts at 1 p.m.
