The Lake Forest College women's hockey team closed out the regular season with a 7-0 victory over visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday.
The Foresters' five seniors were honored before their final regular season home game and one of them, defenseman
Sophia Chapman, scored to give them the lead midway through the opening period and raise her season goal total to three. Another, forward
Zoey Whittington, converted a power play opportunity at 6:51 int he second and struck again at 11:31 to make it a 3-0 game.
Lake Forest added four more goals in the third. Junior
Emma Sweeney's fourth of the year was followed by the first of sophomore defenseman Kate Breenan's collegiate career less than four minutes into the period. Whittington's second short-handed goal this winter completed her first career hat trick at the 15:40 mark and tied her for the team lead with 10 scores on the season. Freshman forward
Gabriela Giglione closed out the scoring with an empty net goal with 5.5 seconds to play. It was her third tally of the year.
The Foresters racked up 48 shots on goal in the contest and senior goaltender
Donna Fowler turned away all 22 of the Raiders' on-target attempts. It was her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career.
The victory raised Lake Forest's overall record on the season to 12-10-3 and the team finished its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association schedule with a league mark of 8-7-3. MSOE's first season as a varsity program ended at 4-19-2 overall and 3-13-2 in the NCHA.
With a fourth-place finish in the league standings, the Foresters will host fifth-place Aurora University in the quarterfinals of the 2025 NCHA Slaats Cup Playoffs next weekend. The teams will face off Friday and Saturday at 5:00 p.m. with a decisive 20-minute minigame following Saturday's contest if the series is tied.
