Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Late Goal Lifts Lake Forest over Dubuque

The Forester women's hockey team finished off a weekend series sweep of the University of Dubuque with a 2-1 triumph in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The home team out-shot the Spartans 51-16 on the afternoon but the game was tied 1-1 late in the third period. Sophomore forward Victoria Liu retrieved a loose puck behind the Dubuque goal and circled along the boards in front of the visitors' bench. She continued skating into the center of the offensive zone and fired a shot under the goalie from between the circles with just 1:25 on the clock. Liu scored three goals in the series, including both game-winners, and now has four on the season..

Saturday's contest was scoreless until Forester sophomore forward Ella Maher netted her team-high ninth goal of the season at the 13:24 mark of the second period. She was headed toward the middle of the offensive zone from the left side before blasting a shot into the right side of the net.

The score remained 1-0 until the Spartans converted a power play opportunity midway through the final period.

Lake Forest senior goaltender Donna Fowler allowed just one goal for the fourth consecutive game. She made 15 saves and improved to 8-5-1 with a .927 save percentage and 2.05 goals against average this season.

Fowler was also presented with Lake Forest's Ry McCarthy Award between the first and second periods. The honor is bestowed annually on the Forester, selected by her teammates, who best displays spirit, determination, dedication, and love for the game of hockey.

Lake Forest is now 10-8-3 overall and 6-5-3 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play this season. Dubuque, meanwhile, fell to 5-14-1 overall and 1-12-1 in the league.

The Foresters will travel to St. Norbert College, the 13th-ranked team in the nation, for a pair of games next weekend.
