The Lake Forest College football team hosted and defeated the University of Chicago 34-28 in Saturday's season finale.
The Foresters out-gained the Maroons 447-339 on the day and featured a balanced offensive attack, running for 250 yards and passing for 197. The defense, meanwhile, was stingy against the run and limited the visitors to just four rushing yards on 16 carries.
Leading the offense were freshman tailback
Brayden Long and sophomore wide receiver
Dom Esposito. Long carried the ball 14 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns and his 92-yard score matched the longest running play in program history. Esposito caught five passes for 104 yards and scored on a 55-yard reception. He is the only Forester to surpass 100 receiving yards in a game this season.
The home team's other touchdown was the first score of the game. Sophomore Cooper Vance capped off the opening possession, a 12-play, 75-yard drive, by reaching the end zone on an 8-yard run. Sophomore kicker
Hudson Schambach's extra point, the first of his six made kicks in the contest, gave the Foresters a 7-0 lead seven minutes into the contest.
That remained the score until Long scored on a 3-yard run with 11:05 to play in the second quarter.
After a Chicago touchdown made the score 14-7 with 1:51 to play in the half, sophomore quarterback passed for one first down and ran for another to get the ball to the Chicago 26. Schamback then connected on a 44-yard field goal as time expired to make the halftime score 17-7.
After Forester sophomore
Jackson Baird forced and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, Schambach added to Lake Forest's lead with a 25-yard field goal.
A Chicago touchdown with 4:22 remaining in the period trimmed the margin to six points but it returned to 13 just seconds later after Long's long run. Esposito's 55-yard score early in the fourth gave Springer his longest completion of the season and the Foresters a 34-14 advantage. Springer was 17-for-24 for 197 yards on the day and he finished his first year as the starter with the highest competion percentage in program history at 71.66 percent.Â
The Maroons, however, reached the end zone on back-to-back drives in the final period and were able to get the ball back at their own 39 with 22 seconds on the clock, A 10-yard completion on second down set up one final play and laterals led to a fumble recovered by Forester senior linebacker
Max Kaufman to secure the victory.
Junior linebacker
Blake Ware led the Lake Forest defense with 10 tackles while senior linebacker
Charlie Fordon added eight. Fordon and pair of defensive linemen, senior
Victor Aguirre and junior
Preston Mosher, each had a sack in the contest.
Saturday's victory was the seventh in a row for the Foresters and they finished the year 7-3 overall and tied-for-second in the Midwest Conference at 7-2 in league play.
