The Lake Forest College softball team is hosting the 2024 Midwest Conference Tournament this weekend and split its two games on Friday, blanking Cornell College 4-0 before falling 10-3 to Grinnell College. The double-elimination event will continue on Saturday.
Junior pitcher
Brooke Challe tossed her second and the team's 10th shutout of the season in the first game of the day. She scattered six singles, struck out two without walking a batter, and did not allow a Ram to reach third base in the contest. Challe improved to 6-2 with a 3.07 earned run average on the season.
All four Forester runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning, which began with sophomore first baseman
Kyla Chevalier's program record-tying 11th home run of the spring. Junior designated player
Cheyenne Pellettiere and junior shortstop
Kaylee Purgatorio singled in runs later in the frame and sophomore right fielder
Emmie Nyen drove in the final run on a groundout.
Grinnell routed Illinois College 13-0 in five innings in the other opening round game and the Lady Blues defeated Cornell 8-0 in the tournament's first elimination game.
Lake Forest started strong against Grinnell, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. The first run came in on an infield single by Chevalier, the second on a double down the left field line by freshman catcher
Paige Ratliff, and the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder
Brooke Swiecki.
The Forester lead lasted just three hitters, as the first two Pioneer batters drew walks and the third belted a home run. Grinnell took the lead with three in the third and added two more in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Freshman center fielder
Kaia Mismash accounted for two of Lake Forest's four base hits in the game.
The Foresters will take on Illinois College at 10:00 Saturday morning and the winner will advance to play Grinnell in the championship round, which is scheduled to begin at noon. The winner of the tournament will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins next week.
