A score by the home team with just two seconds on the fourth quarter clock sent the Lake Forest College men's lacrosse team home with just its second defeat of the season, a 13-12 decision at Calvin University on Saturday.
The Knights scored the game's first three goals and were ahead 7-3 five minutes into the second quarter. The Forester comeback began with back-to-back scores by sophomore
Brendan Herbert and classmate
Ryan Dousevicz struck in the final minute of the period to make the halftime score 7-6.
Calvin began the second half with a pair of goals before Lake Forest junior
John Casey pulled the visitors back to within two going into the fourth quarter. The home team regained its three-goal advantage 96 seconds into the final period but tallies from Forester freshmen
Carson Pagel and
Macklin Thomas in the next minute-and-a-half brought their team back to within one at 10-9. The Knights netted a man-up goal at the 9:55 mark and then scored again just 10 seconds later to take once again what appeared to be a comfortable three-goal lead.
Casey's second of the game came at the 6:52 mark and consecutive scores by Pagel tied the score at 12 with 2:26 to play. The Knights gained control of the ball with 1:09 remaining and held onto it until the final seconds. Their first shot hit the crossbar but they were able to secure the ground ball and score the game-winner with two ticks on the clock.
Pagel's hat trick was his third of the season and Macklin joined Casey and Herbert with two-goal performances. Junior
Conor Murphy led the visitors with six ground balls and added a game-high five caused turnovers in the contest. Sophomore
John O'Reilly was 9-for-15 and the Foresters 17-for-29 on face-offs as a team.
The narrow loss ended Lake Forest's program record eight-game winning streak and the Foresters are now 13-2 on the season. Calvin improved to 12-5.
Lake Forest is the top seed in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Playoffs and will host a semifinal game on Wednesday.
