Sweep of Monmouth Keeps Lake Forest Perfect in MWC Play

The Forester softball team posted a pair of five-inning victories over Monmouth College at home on Saturday, taking the opener 14-2 and shutting out the Fighting Scots 8-0 in game two.

Sophomore pitcher Kayla Collins earned her 10th victory of the season in the opener, allowing just two base hits and one earned run. Junior Hannah Smith struck out a career-high-tying nine batters while surrendering just three hits and recording her second collegiate shutout in game two.

Freshman center fielder Kaia Mismash, the Foresters' leadoff hitter, led the offense with five base hits on the day. She was 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the opener and 2-for-3 while scoring twice in game two. Mismash also stole two bases in each contest and is now the program's single-season record-holder with 25 so far this spring.

While Mismash was leading Lake Forest in runs scored, sophomore third baseman Cadence Dempsey drove in a team-high six runs in the doubleheader. She had a two-run double in each game and added a two-run single in the second contest.

Junior second baseman Kelly Collins, sophomore first baseman/catcher Kyla Chevalier, freshman designated player Jolie Devalk, and sophomore right fielder Emmie Nyen had a base hit in each game. Chevalier extended her hitting streak to 14 games while sophomore left fielder Brooke Swiecki's ended at 12.

Lake Forest scored eight runs in the first inning of the opener and added five in the third and one more in the fourth. Both of Monmouth's tallies came in the top of the fifth.

The home team scored just once in the first inning of game two before tacking on two runs in the third and four in the fourth. A single through the left side of the infield by sophomore first baseman Makayla Tarasiewicz brought home Devalk with the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth.

The Foresters are now 20-9-1 overall this season and 10-0 in Midwest Conference play. Monmouth fell to 5-26 overall and 3-5 in the league.

Lake Forest will host a pair of non-conference games against the University of Chicago on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
