Foresters Swept by Chicago

The Lake Forest College softball team was defeated 5-0 and 12-10 by the University of Chicago in non-conference action at home on Thursday.

The Maroons broke the scoreless tie in the opener with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and they added one in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

The Foresters were held without a base hit in the contest, which has not happened to them in more than six seasons.

With the same Chicago pitcher in the circle to begin game two, Lake Forest started the bottom of the first inning with four consecutive hits. An out trying to take an extra base on one of them limited the scoring output in the frame but sophomore catcher Kyla Chevalier's RBI single up the middle put the Foresters on top 1-0.

The home team added two runs in the second on a double by sophomore right fielder Emmie Nyen and a base hit by freshman center fielder Kaia Mismash. Two more scored an a home run to center field by sophomore first baseman Makayla Tarasiewicz in the third.

The Foresters' lead disappeared in the top of the fourth, thanks to a five-run rally by Chicago. Lake Forest pulled back ahead in the bottom of the frame when junior second baseman Kelly Collins singled in Mismash and then came all the way around to score on a double by Chevalier.

Another five-run inning for the Maroons in the fifth put them on top for good.

Tarasiewicz belted her second two-run homer of the contest in the bottom of the sixth to trim the margin to one. It was her fourth round-tripper of the season and she became the 25th player in program history to clear the fence at least twice in the same game.

Chicago scored what proved to be two extremely important insurance runs with two outs in the top of the seventh. Lake Forest got one back on a homer down the right field line by Nyen but were unable to complete the comeback.

Mismash was 4-for-5 and Chevalier and Nyen each 3-for-4 as the teams combined for 35 hits in the game.

Lake Forest fell to 20-11-1 while Chicago improved to 23-8 on the season.

The Foresters will resume Midwest Conference play this weekend. They will play a doubleheader at Beloit College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. before hosting Lawrence University at the same time on Sunday.
