Lake Forest Takes Opener, Ties Game Two at Concordia Chicago

The Forester softball team posted a 7-0 victory in game one before tying game two 10-10 at Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday.

Junior Brooke Challe pitched the first six innings for Lake Forest in the opener, allowing just four base hits and striking out three - all in the first inning - without issuing a walk. Freshman Jasmine Kohl retired the side in order in the seventh to finish off Challe's fourth win in five decisions this year.

Sophomore first baseman Kyla Chevalier drove in the Foresters' first four runs of the game. She hit the scoreboard beyond the left field fence with a runner on in the fourth inning and then singled in towo more runs in the fifth.

Sophomore left fielder Brooke Swiecki added a two-run single of her own later in the fifth and the visitors plated one more run in the sixth on a double steal with sophomore third baseman Cadence Dempsey taking second and freshman center fielder Kaia Mismash beating the throw back home.

Mismash, Chevalier, Swiecki, and sophomore outfielder Emmie Nyen each had a pair of base hits in the contest.

Chevalier was also 3-for-4 with another home run, her ninth of the season, in game two. She once again started the scoring, this time by beating out an infield single in the top of the first inning with Mismash sprinting home all the way from second base on the play.

After a three-run homer for the Cougars in the bottom of the third put them on top, Lake Forest responded with a four-run rally in the top of the fourth. Chevalier led off with her second round-tripper of the day and Nyen followed with a double to right-center field. Freshman shortstop Maci Lake tripled over the left fielder's head to drive in another run and scored on freshman catcher Paige Ratliff's first career home run.

Nyen's second double of the game scored one run and Ratliff singled in two more in the fifth, making the score 8-3. Dempsey singled in another run in the sixth and the Foresters' 10th of the game came in on an error in the seventh.

Trailing 10-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, Concordia Chicago scored seven times in the inning to tie the score. With darkness calling, the umpires had no choice but to call the game at that point.

The only runs allowed by Lake Forest junior starting pitcher Hannah Smith in her five innings of work came in on the three-run homer in the third. She struck out a season-high eight batters in the contest.

The tie ended the Foresters' seven-game winning streak and they are now 18-9-1 on the season. Concordia Chicago fell to 8-17-1.

Lake Forest will resume Midwest Conference with a doubleheader against visiting Monmouth College Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
