The Lake Forest College softball team began its Spring Break trip by splitting a pair of games on Monday, falling 4-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout before doubling up the US Coast Guard Academy 6-3 in Clermont, Florida.
Freshman center fielder
Kaia Mismash scored four of the Foresters' seven runs on the day, including their only tally against Stout in the bottom of the first inning. After reaching on a bunt single to open the frame, she stole second and eventually came home on a two-out single by sophomore catcher
Kyla Chevalier.
The Blue Devils had already scored twice in the top of the first and added two more runs in the second. Junior
Hannah Smith took over in the circle for Lake Forest in the second inning with the bases loaded and a run already in. She allowed just one of the three inherited baserunners to score and held Stout without another run the rest of the way.
All seven of the Foresters hits came from three players as Chevalier was 2-for-3, Mismash 2-for-4, and sophomore left fielder
Brooke Swiecki 3-for-3 in the contest.
Lake Forest and the Coast Guard combined to score seven runs in the first inning-and-a-half of the Foresters' second game of the day.
Mismash scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman right fielder
Jolie Devalk in the top of the first but the Bears plated three in the bottom of the frame.
After a pair of flyouts to begin the top of the second, a walk and an infield single put a couple of runners on base. sophomore third baseman
Cadence Dempsey singled in one run and two scored on a triple to center field by junior second baseman
Kelly Collins.
Lake Forest eventually tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Collins and a fielder's choice groundout by senior catcher
Angelle Bills.
After surrendering three runs in the first, Forester junior pitcher
Brooke Challe kept the Bears from scoring in the second or third and sophomore
Kayla Collins followed with four scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. She is now 2-0 on the season.
The split left Lake Forest with a 2-2 record on the year while Stout improved to 10-1 and the Coast Guard fell to 0-4.
The Foresters will take on the University of Northwestern Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 (ET) and The College of Wooster at 6:15 p.m. (ET).
