The Forester women's hockey team surrendered a pair of late goals and skated to a 3-3 tie with Lawrence University at home on Saturday. The Vikings then came out on top 2-1 in the shootout for the second point in the conference standings.
The game also started well for the visitors, who scored the first goal of the contest at the 7:17 mark of the opening period.
Lake Forest, however, led 2-1 by the end of the period. Senior forward
Zoey Whittington poked a loose puck under the goaltender at the 10:44 mark for her first score of the season. Sophomore forward
Jenna Fryar's first collegiate goal came with 1:15 on the clock and gave the Foresters the lead. Junior defenseman
Holly Kiernan assisted on both goals.
After a scoreless second period, Forester freshman forward
Gabriela Giglione added her first career goal at 4:28 in the third. Lawrence had gained control of the puck and was attempting to clear the zone when senior defenseman
Abby Meyer got in the way. She passed to junior forward
Emma Sweeney, who crossed it the Giglione rushing toward the goal. Giglione faked right and went left to beat the goalie and make the score 3-1.
Lake Forest out-shot the Vikings 69-17 in the game and appeared to be cruising to the win but Lawrence pulled to within one at the 14:27 mark and pulled the goalie with two minutes left in an effort to tie the score. That plan came to fruition with just 15.9 seconds on the clock.
Neither team was able to score during the three-on-three five-minute overtime period, leading to a three-round shootout to decide which earns the second point in the standings. Lake Forest led after the first round thanks to senior defenseman
Sophia Chapman but Lawrence was successful while the Foresters were not in rounds two and three.
Lake Forest is now 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play this season. Lawrence is 1-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the league.
The Foresters will take on Concordia University Wisconsin next weekend with the teams facing off in Lake Forest Friday night at 7:00 and in Mequon, Wisconsin, Satirday at 4:00 p.m.
