The Lake Forest College volleyball team played twice on Saturday, prevailing in four sets over Benedictine University before falling in five at Elmhurst University.
Seniors
Grace Franz and
Mary Gegen shared the team lead with a dozen kills apiece while classmate
Holland Smits added 11 against Benedictine. Gegen led the team with 17 digs while Franz finished with 16. It marked the third match in the last two seasons where Franz and Gegen each recorded a double-double. Gegen also contributed to half of the team's eight blocks, as did freshman
Sadie Frye.
Sophomore
Lilly Robinson led the Foresters with 24 assists while junior
Juli Barrientos had 22. Both setters also reached double figures in digs with 15 and 11, respectively, while sophomore
Julia Turskey chipped in with 12.
Lake Forest never led in set one, which Benedictine took 25-16. The teams' first nine attempts at set point in the second were unsuccessful before a Franz kill finished it off at 32-30. Set three was tied at 17 before a 6-1 run by the Foresters gave them control and they went on to win it 25-20. Lake Forest rattled off seven straight points in set four and eventually took it 25-21.
Franz pounded out 13 kills and posted a .333 hitting percentage against Elmhurst. Robinson edged out Barrientos 15-14 in the assist category while Barrientos led the squad with 12 digs. Turskey also reached double figures in digs with 10 and Frye recorded a team-high four blocks.
Eight straight points for the Bluejays helped then take the opening set 25-14 and the Foresters closed out a 25-16 victory in set two with a 9-1 run. The home team led throughout the third set, taking it 25-19, and was ahead for the majority of set four, which Lake Forest came back to win 25-23. Elmhurst took the first eight points and rolled 15-2 in set five.
The Foresters are now 5-2 on the season. Benedictine fell to 5-5 and Elmhurst improved to 8-1.
Lake Forest will play at home three times next weekend, beginning with Friday evening's. match-up with Illinois Institute of Technology. The Foresters will also host a triangular with Dominican University and the University of Diubuque for Parents Day on Saturday.
