The Lake Forest College women's hockey team completed a home-and-home series sweep of visiting Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday night with a 4-3 victory.
After defeating the Falcons 4-0 in Mequon, Wisconsin, the previous night, the Foresters took the early lead on Saturday at the 3:37 mark on the first career goal for freshman forward
Victoria Liu.
Lius set up classmate
Tallulah Bryant at the 14:04 mark and it looked like the home team might post a lopsided victory.
Concordia Wisconsin, however, cut the deficit in half just 34 seconds later and then tied the score with 4:46 to play in the first period, which ended with the teams knotted at two.
The Foresters regained the lead at 13:40 in teh second on sophomore forward
Zara Post's first goal of the season. The margin reached two for the second time at the 19:25 mark when junior defensman
Abby Meyer netted her first of the year. Sophomore forward
Macy Gehrke picked up an assist on the play.
Concordia Wisconsin made things interesting when the Falcons converted a power play opportunity with 15:14 still on the third period clock.
That turned out to be the final score, however, as Forester freshman goaltender
Chelsea Denniss turned away 40 of the 43 shots on goal she faced on the night. She finished the weekend with 84 saves in 87 opportunities.
The victories evened Lake Forest's Northern Collegiate Hockey Association record at 2-2-0 and improved the team's overall record to 2-4-0. Concordia Wisconsin fell to 1-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the league. The weekend sweep enabled the Foresters win the "Border Battle," an annual competition between the two programs, and the team was presented with the Border Battle Cup after the game.
Lake Forest will continue NCHA play at Trine University next weekend with Fridaynight's game set to start at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday's at 2:00 in the afternoon.
