The Forester volleyball team posted a four-set victory at Ripon College Friday night to improve to 4-0 in Midwest Conference play.
Lake Forest fell behind by as many as seven points early in the opening set but eventually closed to within one at 23-22. The Red Hawks took the next two points, however, and led by a set.
Set two began in a much better fashion for the Foresters, who won six of the first eight points and never trailed. They led 19-16 before rattling off five straight points, including two on aces by sophomore
Lilly Robinson, and took the set 25-18.
The first half of set three was close. Already ahead 12-11, the visitors won 13 of the next 17 points to take a one-set lead.
The Foresters jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set but the home team came back and had a set point opportunity at 24-23. A kill by Lake Forest junior
Riley Stapley tied the score and back-to-back kills by senior
Mary Gegen finished off the match.
Gegen had at least three kills in each set and led all players in the contest with 16 overall. She also posted a .368 hitting percentage and added a team-high 13 digs on the night.
Fellow senior
Grace Franz registered a double-double as well, tallying 13 kills and 11 digs. She also served up five aces to share match-high honors with sophomore
Lilly Robinson, who led the squad with 27 assists.
The victory was the seventh in a row for the Foresters, matching the eighth-longest streak in program history. They improved to 13-4 overall while Ripon fell to 6-15 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Lake Forest will host Eureka College in a non-conference match Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
