Foresters Double Up Saint Mary's, Earn Series Split

Box Score

Sophomore forward Sydney Simone's third period goal helped clinch a victory for the Lake Forest College women's hockey team, which outscored visiting Saint Mary's University 6-3 on Sunday.

Simone avoided several Cardinals before sending the puck into the left side of the goal for her seventh score of the season. Senior defenseman Kayla Griffith assisted on the goal that gave the home team a 5-3 lead with 6:55 to play in the contest. Forester freshman forward Annie Dalton then closed out the scoring with another insurance goal with 3:07 on the clock. Dalton's eighth of the year was set up by sophomore defenseman Amanda Boisjolie and junior forward Amy Budde.

Budde scored the first goal of the contest shortly after Saint Mary's went on the power play early in the opening period. Her second shorthanded score this season also gave her the team lead with 13 tallies on the year. Sophomore forward Kate Fanning assisted on the goal at the 2:50 mark.

Saint Mary's converted that same power play opportunity at 3:51 but Forester senior forward Olivia Spellmire regained the lead for the home team just 26 seconds later on her 12th goal of the year.

After the Cardinals netted their second of three power play goals on the day at the 12:06 mark of the first period, Lake Forest pulled ahead once again with a power play goal of its own with just 2:05 on the clock. Sophomore forward Lexi Morgan came up with the tally to tie Budde for the team lead in goals and assists were credited to Spellmire and sophomore forward Maddie Davis.

The Foresters had a 16-9 advantage in shots on goal in the first period and led 3-2 after an action-packed 20 minutes of play.

The official game-winner was scored by Morgan and assisted by Budde and Simone at the 9:35 mark of the second period. It was Morgan's team-high 14th goal of the year.

Saint Mary's pulled back to within one with another power play score at the 18:52 mark of the second period but did not score again on Lake Forest sophomore goaltender Jacque Rogers, who improved to 5-1-0 on the year. She made 21 saves as the Foresters outshot their guests 47-24 on the afternoon.

The Foresters avenged Saturday night's 3-2 loss to Saint Mary's and improved to 9-4-0 on the season while the Cardinals fell to 6-7-0.

Lake Forest will play another non-conference series next weekend when the team travels to face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday night at 7:00 and at 2:00 the following afternoon.
