Tough Third Period Dooms Foresters in Season Opener

Box Score

Freshman forward Megan Lyke had a goal and assist in her collegiate debut but the Lake Forest College women's hockey team was defeated 3-2 by the University of St. Thomas Saturday night.

Lyke and sophomore forward Sydney Simone assisted senior defenseman Caroline Campbell on the game's first goal, a power play score at 12:23 in the opening period. It was the 10th career score for Campbell.

St. Thomas had a slight 7-5 advantage in shots on goal in the first period and a 7-6 edge in the second but the score remained 1-0 in favor of the home team.

The Tommies finally got on the scoreboard at the 3:41 mark of the third period but Lyke intercepted a pass and blasted a shot past the Tommie goaltender just nine seconds later to put the Foresters back on top.

The visitors out-shot Lake Forest 13-4 in the final period and tied the score again on a short-handed goal at the 12:30 mark. The Tommies netted what proved to be the game-winner less than four minutes later.

It was the season opener for both teams. Lake Forest and St. Thomas, the eighth and 10th-ranked teams in the nation, respectively, will face off again in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon at 2:30.
