Foresters Rout Finlandia to Close Out 2014

The Lake Forest College women's hockey team completed the 2014 part of its season schedule with a 10-2 victory over Finlandia University at home on Saturday. Forester junior defenseman Alex Stensland started the scoring with her first goal of the season.

Stensland's power play score at the 10:53 mark of the opening period was assisted by senior forwards Morgam Pope and Emily Wybo. Forester junior forward Melissa Paluch also scored on the power play at 19:21 with assists credited to senior forward Marissa Weber and freshman defenseman Kayla Griffith.

Junior forward Michelle Greeneway extended the home team's lead to three goals at the 5:01 mark of the second period. The score was set up by Paluch and senior defenseman Erin Shamley. After Finlandia finally got on the scoreboard at 9:20, the Foresters regained their three-goal lead on Weber's third score of the season at 13:38. Freshman forward Olivia Spellmire and junior forward Holly Lesperance assisted on the goal. Sophomore forward Allie Girard closed out the second period scoring with just seven seconds on the clock. Her fifth goal of the year was assisted by Shamley and senior forward Laura Reckdenwald.

The Lions scored for the second time on the day just 33 seconds into the third period but Lake Forest responded with five unanswered scores, beginning with Paluch's second of the game and fifth this year at 5:18. Greeneway assisted on the score. Forester freshman forward Caroline Campbell added her first career goal just 54 seconds later with Wybo assisting. Exactly three minutes passed until Lesperance scored for the first time this season. Her short-handed goal was assisted by Stensland. Freshman defenseman Melissa Bodine scored a goal for her first career point at 15:28 and Greeneway took over the team lead with her seventh score of the season at 18:55. Bodine's score was assisted by Reckdenwald and Griffith, who was a team-best +5 on the day, set up Greeneway.

Forester sophomore goaltender Casey Hartfiel made 17 saves in the contest and improved to 4-1-0 on the year.

Lake Forest is now 7-3-1 this season while Finlandia fell to 0-9-0.

The Foresters will not play again until traveling to St. Mary's University on January 9.
