The Lake Forest College women's hockey team, ranked 10th in the
nation by U.S. College Hockey Online, hosted and defeated Finlandia
University 4-0 Saturday night (November 21). The Foresters are now
6-0-1 on the season while the Lions fell to 2-4-0.
Lake Forest out-shot the visitors 10-8 in the first period and
Forester sophomore Kim Herring (Dover, N.H./Groton School) scored
the frame's only goal at the 6:36 mark.
Neither team scored in a second period during which Lake Forest put
21 shots on goal, compared to just three for Finlandia.
Herring lit the lamp again five minutes and four seconds into the
third period with assists credited to junior Lynn Switaj (Avon
Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) and senior Jamie Sauer (Eagle River,
Wis./Northland Pines H.S.). Junior Melissa Kravich's (Wilmette,
Ill./Gustavus Adolphus College) fifth goal of the season just 77
seconds later extended the lead to 3-0. Kravich was assisted by
freshman Rosy Fujimoto (Wasilla, Alaska/Team Alaska) and sophomore
Molly Wallner (Chatham, Ill./Chicago Young Americans). Herring then
closed out the scoring with her third goal of the game and
team-high ninth of the season at 15:03. She was assisted by
freshman Angie Chronis (Ann Arbor, Mich./Victory Honda). It was
Herring's second career hat trick. Her first was also at home
against Finlandia on November 22, 2008.
The Foresters put a dozen shots on goal in the third period and
junior goaltender Alyssa Wintermute (Belmont, Ontario/St. Thomas
Panthers) stopped all eight of the Lions' to complete her second
shutout of the season and school record-tying fifth of her
career.
The same two teams will face off again at 2:00 tomorrow
afternoon.
