The Forester women's hockey team blanked visiting St. Mary's
University 4-0 on Sunday (November 1) to complete a season-opening
weekend sweep of the Cardinals.
After surrendering three first-period goals the night before, Lake
Forest made it through the first 20 minutes unscathed and took the
lead on a score by sophomore Jessica Dare (Whitmore Lake,
Mich./Belle Tire) at 8:46. As she did twice the previous night,
freshman Chelsea Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Team Alaska) assisted
on Dare's goal. The Foresters out-shot their guests 11-8 in the
period.
The home team held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal in the second
period and doubled its lead on sophomore Kim Herring's (Dover,
N.H./Groton School) first goal of the season at 9:02. Herring was
assisted by junior Lynn Switaj (Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames).
Junior goaltender Alyssa Wintermute (Belmont, Ontario/St. Thomas
Panthers) completed her fourth career shutout with three saves in
the third period while the Foresters racked up 20 shots on goal.
Dare lit the lamp for the fifth time on the weekend at 9:41,
already surpassing the four goals she scored during the entire
2008-09 season. Herring closed out the scoring with her second of
the game at 11:53. The power play score was assisted by sophomore
Molly Wallner (Chatham, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) and senior
Courtney Bean (Peoria, Ill./Team Illinois).
Lake Forest will begin Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play
next weekend (November 6-7) at UW-Superior. The teams will face off
at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.
