The Lake Forest College softball team was edged out 2-1 in the doubleheader opener before winning game two 6-2 at Ripon College on Saturday.
Junior shortstop
Kaia Mismash accounted for half of the Foresters' six base hits in game one and all three were doubles. She is just the eighth player in program history to double three times in a game.
A solo home run for Ripon in the bottom of the fifth inning broke the scoreless tie. Sophomore first baseman
Nicole Marceau doubled to lead off the sixth and sophomore pinch-runner
Bella Antonucci stole third. A run-scoring groundout off the bat of junior left fielder
Jolie Devalk plated Antonucci with the tying run.
The Redhawks started the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs and a sacrifice fly brought in the winning run.
Forester senior pitcher
Riley Stiles allowed just two runs on seven base hits in the contest. She also struck out a pair of batters and did not issue a walk.
Lake Forest got off to a much better start in game two, taking the lead in the top of the first on a two-run double by senior third baseman
Cadence Dempsey.
Another double, the fourth of the dy for Mismash, scored two more Foresters in the fourth and the score remained 4-0 until Ripon finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior right fielder
Emmie Nyen, who scored on Mismash's double, drove in two runs in the top of the seventh on her second single of the game.
The home team was able to score once in the bottom of the seventh but the comeback bid ended there as Forester freshman pitcher
Ellie Adduci retired the only two batters she faced.
Fellow freshman pitcher
Vanessa Buske allowed just one earned run in six-and-a-third innings in the circle to earn the victory. The Red Hawks managed just four hits, all singles, and walked two while striking out four.
The doubleheader split left Lake Forest at 15-9 overall and 7-3 in Midwest Conference play and Ripon at 18-8 overall and 5-3 in the league.
The Foresters will play a non-conference doubleheader at North Central College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
