The Lake Forest College softball team won twice on Monday, posting a 5-3 victory over Moravian University, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, and winning 4-3 in walk-off fashion against the University of Mount Union.
Junior second baseman
Lia Taglia and catcher
Paige Ratliff were each 2-for-3 at the plate against Moravian, and Ratliff singled in Paglia to break a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth inning.
Taglia also scored on a groundout by senior first baseman
Kyla Chevalier in the top of the first. Moravian plated two in the bottom of the fourth but the Foresters regained the lead in the fifth with Chevalier and senior left fielder Brooke Swiecke each driving in a run.
The Greyhounds tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and had a runner on second when sophomore pitcher Hannah Tutor entered the game in relief of senior
Morgan Traxinger. Tutor did not allow a hit over the final two-and-two-thirds innings to earn the victory and even her record on the year at 1-1.
Swiecki scored on insurance run in the top of the seventh and the Foresters held on for the win.
Lake Forest trailed Mount Union 3-0 in the middle of the fourth but a double to the left-center field gap by freshman catcher
Laylah Gore brought home two runs in the bottom of the fourth and she doubled again on a fly ball over the left fielder's head to score Swiecki and tie the game in the sixth.Â
Senior pitcher
Riley Stiles, who went the distance in the circle, retired the Purple Raiders in order in the top of the seventh. Freshman pinch hitter
Emma Carney singled to right with one out in the bottom of the frame and junior
Maci Lake replaced her as a pinch runner. Lake broke for second on the first pitch and raced all the way to third as senior right fielder
Emmie Nyen bunted and beat the throw to first. Another bunt, this one from Chevalier, brought home Lake with the winning run.
Nyen's single in the seventh was her fourth of the game and she leads the Foresters with eight hits so far this season.
Just two of the three runs allowed by Stiles were earned and she struck out six batters in the victory.
Lake Forest improved to 4-2 on the year while Moravian fell to 3-2 and Mount Union to 4-4.
After a day off, the Foresters will continue play at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, by taking on the University of Northwestern (Minn.) and Alfred University on Thursday.
