The Lake Forest softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end Sunday at Mohr Field, as the Foresters dropped a pair of games to Illinois College.
Â
The Foresters (14-12, 6-2 MWC) could not get their offense going in game one, falling 5-0, then dropped a 10-4 decision in game two.
Â
Game 1: Illinois College 5, Lake Forest 0
After scoring at least 11 runs during their six-game winning streak, the Foresters' offense was held in check in game one, as Lake Forest lost 5-0.
Â
Riley Stiles (6-3) took the loss as the starting pitcher for Lake Forest. In her seven innings of work, Stiles allowed six hits and five runs (three earned), while walking three batters and striking out four. The four strikeouts matched her season high in a start.
Â
Illinois College was able to jump out to an early lead by posting a three-run second inning behind three singles and two walks. The Lady Blues added on two more insurance runs in the top of the fourth to push the lead to 5-0.
Â
Senior
Kelly Collins led the way offensively for Lake Forest by hitting 2-for-3 on the game, while junior
Emmie Nyen reached base twice on a pair of walks.
Â
Lake Forest threatened in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings but could not scratch across a run. Collins doubled to lead off the fourth, then Nyen walked to put two runners on base with no outs, but three straight fly outs ended the threat.
Â
Left fielder
Brooke Swiecki led off the fifth with a triple to right-center field but was left on the bases. For the game, Lake Forest stranded seven runners on the basepaths.
Â
Game 2: Illinois College 10, Lake Forest 4
Lake Forest again faced an early deficit that could not be overcome in game two, as the Lady Blues took home the 10-4 win.
Â
Senior
Hannah Smith (2-5) earned the start in the circle but did not have her best control on an overcast, windy day at Mohr Field. Smith walked three hitters and hit another batter in the first inning, as Illinois College struck for four runs in the opening inning. For the game, Smith tied a season high with five walks allowed and surrendered five runs, despite only giving up three hits on the game.
Â
Center fielder
Kaia Mismash was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI as the catalyst for the Lake Forest offense. Â
Â
Lake Forest worked its way back into the game bit by bit. Mismash reached base on an error on a bunt that scored
Lia Taglia to get the Foresters on the board. Collins kept the line moving with an RBI single to right field to bring Mismash home to halve the deficit and make the score 4-2.
Â
Mismash was again at the center of action in the bottom of the fourth, as she perfectly executed a bunt single past the pitcher to score Swiecki and bring the Foresters to within a run.
Â
Walks again popped up to hurt Lake Forest in the top of the sixth, as Smith and
Brooke Challe combined to walk the bases loaded with a trio of walks to start the frame. Illinois College broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple and would pile on three additional runs to push its advantage to 10-3.
Â
The Foresters will continue its homestand at Mohr Field this weekend. Lake Forest will host Ripon College on Saturday for a doubleheader; the first pitch of game one will be at 1 p.m.
