Smith Tosses No-Hitter, Foresters Score Nine in an Inning during Final Day in Florida

The Lake Forest College softball team rallied for an 11-6 comeback victory over Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon after falling 1-0 to Rowan University in the morning.

Rowan, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, entered the game with a .374 team batting average but went without a base hit against Forester senior pitcher Hannah Smith. The Profs' only baserunner of the game reached on a leadoff walk in the second, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch. Smith, who also held Lawrence Univerity hitless last April, is just the fourth pitcher in program history to record multiple no-hitters. She is also the second to toss a no-hitter in a Forester loss.

Lake Forest had four base hits, including two by junior third baseman Cadence Dempsey, in the contest.

After a pitchers' duel in the morning, the Foresters came back to win a game that featured 17 runs and 24 hits in the afternoon.

Ohio Wesleyan led 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior shortstop Kaylee Purgatorio led off the frame with a base hit and, nine batters later, made the first out on a sacrifice fly. Dempsey and sophomore center fielder Kaia Mismash each had two of Lake Forest's nine singles in the inning, which could have gone longer if not for a line drive double play to end it.

Sophomore first baseman Kyla Chevalier and designated player Paige Ratliff each doubled in the sixth to account for the final score. They joined Dempsey, junior right fielder Emmie Nyen, and senior catcher Cheyenne Pellettiere with two hits in the game while Mismash finished with three to raised her team-high batting average this season to .552.

Junior pitcher Riley Stiles came on in relief with two outs in the top of the fifth and tossed two-and-a-third scoreless innings to earn the victory and improve to 3-0 with a 0.91 earned run average on the year.

The Foresters finished their season-opening Spring Break trip to Florida with a record of 6-4. Rowan improved to 11-0 and Ohio Wesleyan fell to 4-6.

Lake Forest will take on Carthage College in the team's home opening doubleheader next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
