The Lake Forest College swimming and diving teams posted victories at Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday. The Forester women posted a comfortable 126-51 while the men won the final event by a narrow margin to prevail 100-99.
Knowing they needed a victory in the 200-freestyle relay to have an opportunity to win the meet, sophomore
Benjamin Scott, juniors
Alexander Wilson and
Demetri Zemenides, and senior
Noah McAdam still trailed by more than eight-tenths second halfway through the race. Zemenides made up nearly a fourth of the margin during the third leg and McAdam finished off the comeback, edging out the Scarlet Hawks by just .04 seconds with the relay's final time of 1:26.66.
Lake Forest also needed a third-place finish in the same event to finish off the team victory and sophomore
Gavin Biccum, senior
Matthew Makepeace, junior
Barrett Coffey, and senior
Ben Jacob did so by more than six seconds with a time of 1:32.41.
Several other narrow margins throughout the meet were also essential for the men in earning the win. McAdam prevailed in the 200-freestyle by .07 seconds in 1:46.76 and Zemenides edged out the third-place finisher in the 50-freestyle by .01 seconds and touched the wall first by just .28 seconds in the 100-freestyle (48.99). Three other margins of .2 seconds of less also went to the Forester men.
Additional victories on the men's side were turned in by sophomore
Clayton Berg in the 200-IM (2:03.54) and Biccum in the 500-freestyle (4:53.58).
A day that ended with a Lake Forest triumph in the final event also began with one in the first as (in order) freshman
Joss Hoffman, junior
Amelie Andres, freshman
Isabella Rozenbergas, and sophomore
Audrey Kilmer won the 200-medley relay by more than six seconds in 4:09.03.
Andres added a victory in the 200-freestyle in 2:04.15, Rozenbergas took the 50-freestyle in 24.70 seconds, and Kilmer's time of 2:12.93 in the 200-IM had her waiting more than 18 seconds for the runner-up to finish. Andres also won the 100-butterfly (1:03.62) and Rozenbergas the 100-backstroke (1:01.20). Freshman
Abigail Atwell out-swam the competition in the 500-freestlye with a time of 5:44.69 and Kilmer turned in the team's final win of the day, finishing the 100-breaststroke in 1:11.13.
The Lake Forest women are now 7-3 and the men 5-5 in dual meets this season.
The Foresters will host St. Norbert College in their final dual of the season next Saturday. The Senior Day competition will begin at 1:00 p.m.
