Foresters Sweep Lawrence, Clinch another MWC Title

The Lake Forest College softball team defeated Lawrence University 6-1 and 8-0 in five innings on Sunday to secure the program's seventh Midwest Conference title in the last 10 full seasons and the 13th conference championship in team history.

Forester junior pitcher Hannah Smith tossed her first career no-hitter and the 18th in team history in game two. The only baserunner she allowed was on a two-out walk in the second inning. Smith struck out seven batters in her second shutout in as many days and improved to 5-4 on the season.

Sophomore pitcher Kayla Collins took a perfect game into the fifth inning in the opener. She allowed just a run on three hits while striking out a pair in 5.1 innings of work. Collins is now 12-2 with a 2.94 earned run average this season. Freshman Jasmine Kohl allowed just one hit while getting the final five outs.

Freshman center fielder Kaia Mismash and sophomore right fielder Emmie Nyen, the first two hitters in Lake Forest's lineup, each had four base hits, four runs scored, and two stolen bases in the doubleheader. Mismash also drove in four runs, including two on her second inside-the-park home run of the season.

Forester sophomore first baseman/catcher also drove in four runs on the day to raise her program record total this season to 51. Lake Forest's stolen base total this season is also a school record and, with six in the opener and three in game two, that mark now stands at 90.

Lake Forest scored twice in the bottom of the first inning of game two and added one in both the second and third  and two in the fourth. The Vikings plated their only run of the doubleheader in the sixth.

The home team also jumped out to the early lead with a run in the first inning of game two. The Foresters broke the game open with three in the second and rallied for three more in the fourth. Lake Forest's only senior, catcher Angelle Bills, was 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener and came on to pinch run in the fifth inning of game two. She completed her Senior Day by coming around to score the game-ending run on a double by sophomore third baseman Cadence Dempsey.

The Foresters are now 23-11-1 overall and still undefeated after 14 conference games. Lawrence fell to 13-19 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Lake Forest will travel to Carthage College on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader before closing out the regular season at Ripon College on Sunday. The Foresters will host the four-team MWC Tournament May 10-11.
