Forester Men and Women in Third after Day Two of MWC Championships

Saturday was day two of three at the 2024 Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Grinnell College and both Lake Forest College finished the evening in third place.

The Forester women have tallied 447 points and trail St. Norbert College by 39 and Grinnell by 126. The home team also leads the men's competition with 656.5 points with St. Norbert second at 388.5, 22.5 ahead of Lake Forest.

Highlighting Saturday's competition for the Foresters was freshman Audrey Kilmer, who won the 400-IM by more than six seconds with a time of 4:31.10. Kilmer also anchored Lake Forest's 800-freestyle relay team, which posted a comeback victory with a time (7:46.49) that also ranks third in team annals. Senior Ally McCarthy led off the relay and was followed by freshman Izabella Harju, sophomore Valeria Welk, and Kilmer.

In addition to the victories, Lake Forest also had five runner-up finishes on Saturday, beginning with senior Harriet Townsend in 1-meter diving. Her score of 367.70 points was was less than 11 behind the winner. McCarthy second in the 200-freestyle in 1:55.52 and sophomore Amelie Andres in the 100-breaststroke in 1:06.00. On the men's side, junior Noah McAdam clocked a 51.19 in the 100-backstroke to finish second, and he followed sophomores Alexander Wilson and Demetri Zemenides and junior Ben Jacob on the runner-up 800-freestyle relay team, which finished in 7:02.15.

Sophomores Noah Garza and Andrew Lee were fifth and eighth, respectively, in the men's 400-IM while senior Ella Burns finished fourth and junior Sylvie Paddon-Jones fifth in the women's race.

The 100-butterfly was next and A-Final appearances were made by freshman Clayton Berg (6th) and Cameron Schlosser (7th) on the men's side and junior Michelle Paddon-Jones (4th) and Harju (6th) for the Forester women. The prelims time of 58.49 seconds posted by Paddon-Jones ranked her third in team history in the event.

Wilson, Jacob, and freshman Gavin Biccum qualified for the 200-freestyle A-final, which they placed fourth, fifth, and seventh, respectively. Welk joined McCarthy in the women's race and finished fifth.

The men's 100-breaststroke included just one Forester with senior Luke Bedalov placing eighth.

Freshman Benjamin Scott was sixth in the men's 100-backstroke and sophomore Kate Ryan seventh in the women's race.

Six more events in each gender will be contested on Sunday with the morning prelims beginning at 9:00 and the evening finals at 4:00.
