Foresters Honor Heroes During Home Opener

Foresters Honor Heroes During Home Opener

Saturday, September 14 dawned bright and warm this year. With sunshine and a few clouds in the sky, it was perfect football weather at Farwell Field as the Foresters took the field for their home opener of the 2019 season against the Grinnell College Pioneers.

Following the Foresters’ parade onto the field, the Lake Forest American Legion McKinlock Post 264 presented the colors for the playing of the National Anthem as the team celebrated annual Heroes Day.

In its tenth year, this wonderful tradition recognizes all heroes in the Lake County and Lake Forest communities, as well as anyone with a connection to the College who serves or has served in the military. Between the first and second quarter, the firemen, police officers, EMTs, and servicemen and women in attendance were brought to the middle of the field and were introduced individually along with their title or rank. The tribute was a touching way to honor them for their courage, sacrifice, and heroism.

The football team, in conjunction with the Alpha Phi Sorority, also collected donated items for their annual care package program for the United States Military. Alpha Phi had a table set up at the east end of the field and spent the day gathering requested items. The team and sorority worked together to send more than 25 care packages to overseas military personnel.

The game ended on a high note for the Foresters as they routed the Pioneers 44 – 0. Click here to read more about the game and click here to see photos from the day.
