The Forester men's basketball team was defeated 75-68 by visiting University of Chicago on Saturday in the season opener for both squads. Junior guard Torrey Davis led Lake Forest with 18 points in the contest.
Davis scored 14 of his points after halftime. He shot 7-for-10 from the field in the game and also led the home team with three assists.
The Foresters shot just 38.7 percent from the floor while the Maroons connected on 58.1 percent of their field goal attempts. Lake Forest was out-rebounded 40-27 but committed just seven turnovers while forcing 22.
Chicagoi scored the first eight points of the game and led by as many as 18 late in the opening period.
Trailing 41-25 at halftime, scored the first seven points of the second half to briefly cut the deficit to single digits. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Andrew Toth made it an eight-point game with less than 13 minutes to play and a basket by Schick with 5:46 remaining trimmed the Chicago lead to seven. The difference was just six after a pair of free throws by Davis with 3:19 left and a jumper by Madson made the score 67-63 with 2:04 on the clock. The Foresters would get no closer, however, and the Maroons made six of eight foul shots in the final minute to secure the victory.
Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference play at Cornell College next Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
