Lake Forest College handball player Leo Canales was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for his performance at the United States Handball Association National Collegiate Championships last weekend.
Canales, a senior, captured the Men's Open Singles title at the event with a 16-21, 21-16, 11-8 triumph in the championship. His semifinal match was just as close, with Canales coming out on top 21-20, 17-21, 11-5. His opponents in both contests were from host Missouri State University, who the Foresters edged out by a single point (2,309-2,308) for the men's team title.
In addition to his singles championship, Canales also earned runner-up honors with fellow senior Ricardo Palma in Open Doubles. They posted a pair of victories before falling in the final to the last two players Canales defeated in singles play.
All-American honors go to the semifinalists in singles and the finalists in doubles and Canales made that list for the second time in both categories. He was the singles runner-up a year ago and, along with Palma, the runner-up in doubles in 2016.
Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays.
